Birthdays are special. They bring cake, gifts, and smiles. But sometimes, we forget them! Don’t worry, though. Google Calendar is here to help. It keeps track of all the important dates — especially birthdays.
Let’s make sure you never miss a birthday again. 🎉
Why Add Birthdays to Google Calendar?
Here’s the deal. When you add birthdays, Google Calendar sends you reminders. That way, you can be the friend who always remembers! It helps with:
- Planning celebrations
- Buying gifts on time
- Sending birthday texts or emails
- Looking like a birthday superhero
There Are Two Main Ways to Do It
You can choose how you want to add birthdays:
- Through your Google Contacts
- Manually add them as calendar events
Let’s dive into both!
Method 1: Add Birthdays via Google Contacts
This is super easy and automatic. If you use Google Contacts, Google Calendar will pull birthdays from there.
Step 1: Go to Google Contacts
Visit contacts.google.com.
Step 2: Select a Contact
Pick a friend, coworker, or loved one from your contact list.
Step 3: Add Their Birthday
Click on Edit contact (the little pencil icon). Scroll down and find the section called More fields. There, you’ll see the Birthday field.
Enter the date and click Save.
Tada! Their birthday will now show up in your calendar under the “Birthdays” calendar.

Step 4: Make Sure the Birthdays Calendar is On
Go to Google Calendar. On the left-hand side, find Other calendars. Enable the one that says Birthdays.
If you don’t see it, click the plus sign to browse calendars. Choose Contacts birthdays and enable it.
Now all your contacts’ birthdays will show up like magic! 🎂
Method 2: Add Birthdays Manually
Don’t use Google Contacts? No problem! You can still add birthdays manually so they show up every year.
Step 1: Go to Google Calendar
Open Google Calendar in your web browser.
Step 2: Create a New Event
Click on the day of your friend’s birthday. A box will pop up to create an event.
Step 3: Add the Birthday Details
Title your event something like “Ben’s Birthday.”
Set the event for All day so it doesn’t show as a busy time slot.

Step 4: Repeat It Every Year
Click on Does not repeat and change it to Annually on June 5 (or whatever the birthday is).
Boom! It’s now a yearly reminder.
Step 5: Set a Notification
You can add a reminder to get notified before the birthday. Click Add notification and pick how many days in advance you want a heads-up.
This is great if you want time to buy a gift or card!

Tips and Tricks for Birthday Magic
- Color-code birthdays: Give them a special color like pink or gold so they pop out on your calendar.
- Add emojis 🎈🎁🎉: Make the event name fun! Try “🎂 Jess’s Birthday 🎂”
- Add gift ideas in the notes: Keep little notes attached to the calendar event each year.
- Create a shared birthday calendar: For family or office birthdays, make a shared calendar everyone can see!
What If You Forget to Add One?
No worries! You can add it anytime. Google Calendar will start showing it immediately after you save.
And if you already marked some birthdays on paper, why not migrate them all into the digital world?
Can You Remove or Edit a Birthday?
Yes! Simply go to the calendar event or the contact, and click Edit or Delete.
Note: If it’s coming from Google Contacts, changes must happen there — not in the calendar app.
What Else Can You Do?
You can go the extra mile with 💡 birthday automation!
- Set up an email or message template
- Use Google Assistant to remind you
- Design custom e-cards and link them in the event description
